From onions to seafood, refrigerated ocean cargo volumes are expected to grow in the coming years. According to research firm MarketsandMarkets, a growing middle class in Asia, superior traceability and documentation in the European supply chain and changing tastes and preferences will drive the world reefer sector to expand by a compound annual growth rate of 15.6 percent between 2014 and 2019.

In the US, Port Miami has handled 27 per cent more refrigerated cargo compared to the same period last year. Reefer cargo from Latin America was up 38 per cent and is part of the reason for the increased volume at Port Miami. Increases are also being seen at Port of Savannah and Port Tampa.

To deal with the growing reefer market and the need for proper management and control, this week ORBCOMM is announcing its two-way integration with McLeod LoadMaster Dispatch software.  Prior to the announcement, McLeod Software customers were able to view real-time trailer data for both refrigerated and dry transport assets through their LoadMaster interface. This included trailer data like reefer temperature, mileage, fuel levels, operational condition, alarm events and GPS position.

With two-way integration and communications, customers will also have command and control capabilities, including the ability to turn the reefer on/off, set temperatures and switch between continuous and start/stop modes. All these capabilities will enable ORBCOMM and McLeod customers to increase asset utilization, enhance customer service and proactively prevent spoilage cargo claims.

ORBCOMM will be demonstrating these new capabilities at a breakout session at this week’s McLeod Software UC 2015 in Birmingham, Alabama. Titled “How Real-time Trailer Information and Two-Way Communications is Going to Change the Way You Do Business”, Chris Corlee, Pre-Sales Engineer and TMS Integration Specialist at ORBCOMM will show where customers can expect to find these new capabilities and how to leverage the technology in day-to-day business.  The session is scheduled for Tuesday October 6, at 1:15 pm at East Meeting Room A. You can also visit ORBCOMM at the Exhibition Hall in Booth 219. See you there!
