Fleet Management: Connecting More Than Just the Dots with M2M and IoT

The needs of fleet operators vary significantly from one to the next; from simple dots-on-the-map, to monitoring driver behavior, to optimizing fuel consumption and streamlining vehicle maintenance. No one product can meet all customer requirements which is why technology providers must offer flexible products and services so that integrators can customize solutions to meet client needs, and evolve and adapt as those needs change.

ORBCOMM launched an award-winning product for the fleet management industry at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last year. The dual-mode SkyWave IDP-782 device enables connectivity over the cellular network and backup connectivity over satellite any time cellular is not available. The device features a rich set of standard features as well as a unique flexible programming environment that supported the development of custom applications.

Since then, the dual-mode SkyWave IDP-782 has been successfully deployed by energy companies in Argentina to monitor vehicles transporting crude oil across borders, mining companies in Peru to track the location of heavy machinery operating in remote sites, and oil and gas companies in the Middle East looking to improve the safety of drivers operating utility vehicles in the field.

We’re excited to unveil our expanded fleet management portfolio at Mobile World Congress this year. The new cellular-only SkyWave IDP-782 provides customers the same functionality and flexibility as the dual-mode version but at a more competitive cost. The cellular SkyWave IDP-782 is ideal for vehicle tracking and driver monitoring applications in areas where cellular coverage is widely available.

We are also excited to announce the launch of a new product: viaFleet, a comprehensive web-based application that enables fleet operators to see the location of mobile assets in real-time, monitor driver behavior, streamline vehicle maintenance schedules, communicate with drivers and much more.

With an intuitive, easy-to-use graphical interface, the viaFleet application displays the location of assets on a map in real time, tracks asset movements with breadcrumb reports and supports advanced reporting capabilities on speeding events, dwelling times, geofence access and asset health, allowing customers to significantly improve operational efficiencies.

Users can configure a series of thresholds and receive real-time alerts via text or email when specific events are detected. When used with third-party products, the viaFleet solution can also enable driver-dispatch communications via text messages, e-forms, driver ID applications, security (panic-button) applications and more.

To learn more about the SkyWave IDP-782 and viaFleet solution, visit us at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (Hall 8.0, booth G11) from February 22 to 25, or visit

Systems like this open the door for fleet managers to customize the experience to better fit their specific needs. The amount of interaction that can take place between manager and individual driver is also a major advantage. It’ll be interesting to see how the fleet management industry continues to evolve in the future.
